We owe a lot to those who have served in the different branches of the United States military. Every year on November 11th, Veterans Day is celebrated to honor those who have given so much to our country. Over 13 million veterans are aged 55 or older and took part in some of the significant moments in our history.
Whether you have a veteran in your family or not, Veterans Day is the perfect opportunity to show your love and appreciation. Silver Comet Village would like to provide some ideas that you can do for or with the veteran in your life, to show them your gratitude on a day set aside just for them.
On Veterans Day, a variety of events take place around the country. It’s not just major cities with televised parades; many towns and cities come together to celebrate the service and sacrifices of veterans through different events and activities as well.
If your area is holding a celebratory event, Silver Comet Village encourages you to attend with the senior veteran in your life. These events could include visiting a school where they are holding a special event for students to meet veterans, a local parade, or look into local restaurants and businesses that are offering specials for that day for veterans. (You can find participating restaurants and other Veterans Day benefits here!)
You can also go the extra mile and help place flags around your community, waving the stars and stripes of the American Flag in honor of those who served bravely under it. Even a simple “Thank you for your service” in passing, can mean the world to a veteran. An appreciative gesture goes a long way.
Beyond The Basics
Perhaps you want to do more for senior veterans, not just the ones in your life, but the ones in your community. There’s a variety of easy ways you can give back to them; they’re also great ways to show respect and honor their service.
- Volunteer at a local senior living community: Many veterans are now in senior living communities, and on such an important day both staff and residents would love to see volunteers aiding in the daily activities honoring senior veterans.
- Care packages: If you know of a senior veteran in your area who may live alone, you could put together a care package for them. Care packages with assorted snacks and small gifts are a kind, respectful gesture to show that you’re thankful. You can also use this as an opportunity to befriend them, hear their stories, and let them know that their service was and is appreciated.
It’s not hard to offer a kind gesture to a senior veteran and show them how much their service has meant to you!
At Silver Comet Village, we are dedicated to showing our veterans the treatment they deserve as they move into their golden years in life.
